And the building is done!!!!!!

Working in the rain to finish up!

Finished pole building, happy dances all around!

Burning off the hillside..

Hoop Creek, usually a babbling brook, is up and rushing through the valley from these storms.

Pineville Mtn.State Park and Resort, Ky, just through the Cumberland Gap and up the road a piece..

Well..what a weekend..tornadoes all around..the kids battened the hatches and went to Middlesboro, Ky. to stay in a hotel while the storms flew through at over 55 miles an hour.  Tornadoes to the North, tornadoes to the South..but the valley, property, new pole building and the "kids" were all good.  I had NO sleep last night, worrying about the "kids".  We are in a tornado box right now, in NE Florida..the very tail end of these storms..but looks like it's mostly going to stay to the North of us.

A week well spent.  The first commercial build on the property.  The construction trailer now has TV, wifi, running water..hooked up to electric and sewage..all set for the next phase!

The pond is full!  Just added this because I've had this conversation with area residents.  The ponds are dug into red clay, but they range from mostly empty to half full most of the time..depending on spring and rain runoff.  But, after these storms, the pond is full!

I want to plant rhododendrons on the far bank, with a few dogwoods and/or other flowering trees, and some flowering ground cover..maybe crown vetch.  I know it's "invasive", but ground cover is preferable to bare clay, or weeds!

So, it was a very enventful week for the "kids" and for us.  Looking forward to the next trip..and hoping I can make it!

  1. Thank goodness everyone was safe on your place. I can't imagine how nerve-wracking that must have been for you to not be there. But hey, you have a new pole barn!

  2. Yes..thank goodness! The small farm in Indiana, where my daughter grew up, until the age of 14, had a 100 yr old farm house, and a huge German 2 story barn. We had installed a staircase and a funnel fire place in one of the lofts for a party place. It was ideal and very picturesque and we loved it. But that was another place and time. The Tennessee property had nothing on it..a blank slate. The pole building will house all the farm equipt..be used as a garage..and we're putting a room in 1/3 of the space for a game/music, and guest room (with efficiency kitchen/bathroom/etc.)...we are so very excited. And we have now jumped back to the house plans..one home with two living spaces..or 2 separate log cabin type homes. It's fun and creative to think about...

  3. Sheila, The storms missed our valley.
Great big barn!We built a wonderful barn 2 years ago, I love it. I hope your pond holds, it sometimes takes a few years. Ours is beginning to hold water much better than it did a year ago. I think it is great that this is a family affair, and that you are creating a homestead.

  4. So glad you came through the BAD weather unscathed..I love the pole building..but I sure would rather have the big old 100+ yr old barn we had in Indiana. I'll post a pic of the Indiana Barn, when I tell that story (Back to the Land in Indiana). We do what we can! :o) I have no doubt the pond will go down again (in fact, it probably already has)..but it was fun to see it full..will be nice to see the deer using it..we have TONS of deer on the property.
